In this full day beginners workshop Tara Macdonald will introduce you to the fundamentals of natural dyeing. The use of botanical material; flowers, barks, leaves and roots to colour fabrics, is an ancient and fascinating craft. Spend a fun day in the historic seaside town of Rye, East Sussex developing a new skill.
The workshop covers fabric preparation through scouring and mordanting; using different dye materials and the use of modifiers. You will have the opportunity to test a variety of dyes and fabrics to see some of the range of colours available. In the afternoon you will experiment with Bundle dyeing, useing fresh and dried material to make patterns on the fabric. You will create lots of samples of different fabrics and yarn as well as a silk or cotton scarf, for you to take home.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those who want to learn more.
All materials will be provided and you will be given instruction booklets to keep.
You will be provided with hot drinks and snacks, please bring a packed lunch with you.
There is plenty of parking at The Rye Creative Centre, or it is a 10-15min walk from the station.
